Have you turned you heater on yet?

We went almost 1 1/2 weeks without having the air or heat on! YEAH! This last Wednesday morning...I couldn't stand it any longer! It dropped to almost freezing over night and when I woke up it was 45 degrees in the house! OUCH!

We are find in the bed, all snuggled up...but boy, when you get out of bed and hit the floor it's awful!

Right now I have the heat set on 60 degrees! We will see how long that lasts! We usually put it on 65 or 68 but we are going to try and lower it this year to help save electricity! Our usual electric bill in the winter months is $160-$180! I have already hit $160 for the September/October Billing Cycle! Can't wait to see what next months bill will be! I will keep everyone posted, so that you can see if any of the changes I am making around the house...are, in fact, making a change in the savings, and so far they are!

We also have a fire place but we've never used it! Quite frankly...I am scared too! I worked in insurance and so many times things would catch on fire due to the fireplace (from neglect)! I really wouldn't know how to do any of it anyways even though I grew up with one that was always going!

  • How do you heat your house?
  • Do you use a fireplace?
  • Other means?
  • What do you keep your thermostat on?
I am in my office for a few hours (4 minimum) each day working from home. I am considering buying a portable space heater! My office is downstairs where it is much cooler than the main living space upstairs! As I am writing to you right now...my feet and hands are cold...so this is something that I may act quickly on! Any good suggestions of a product you have purchased? If so, leave me a comment!

If you have any great tips to share, please do so! I actually would be personally interested in someones view on the pros of properly using their fireplace!

Oh my gosh...I love my wood heater!

I came to burning wood last year after loathing the idea of the dirty stuff for years when my central air broke (after I lost my job mind you) and with a 40 degree house I had to do something.

We found a $1500 used Englander for $50 and I've been burning since. Not only did my light bill fall from over $200 to barely $75 it is SOO much warmer!

Give it a try to help save a little more money and take all the precautions you learned from being in the insurance business.

Thanks for the tip! I will definitely look into one! I had a friend that had one growing up...and yes it was always warm in their house! Wonder what there bill was 20 years ago?
