My Save A Lot Grocery Trip

Do you have a local Save A Lot grocery store? Have you ever been shopping there?

We don't have a Save A Lot here in town but my closest one is about 20 minutes away. When I was contacted by a representative at Save A Lot and asked if I would like to receive a gift card to check out the store I was happy to accept! I love being offered the chance to try something new as I always learn new and exciting things from these experiences! (Erin...you're the best!) They sent me a $15 gift card, a huge re-usable grocery bag, and a box of their store brand brownies!

My Shopping Experience:

I decided that I would take a trip to the store to check it out prior to receiving the gift card. I was able to meet a wonderful store manager (James) who was extremely welcoming to the idea of me being there as a new shopper.

I was also able to meet another customer who took the time to tell me how much he loved shopping at Save A Lot. This gentleman actually drove 30 minutes once per week to shop there! He said that their prices couldn't be beat and he loved the simplistic shopping environment! He gave great arguments that I couldn't deny! In his shopping cart he had a huge can of coffee that was only $4. The name brand version would've easily cost more than $10! "Quite a savings" he said as he bid me farewell!

I walked each aisle taking notes on prices and I will have to say that I was really impressed with the overall pricing at the store. Save A Lot prides itself on being able to have prices up to 40% lower than most other stores due to it's low overhead expenses. This is a store that is pretty cut and dry...no fancy shelving or displays, minimal choices (1 or 2 of the same type of product), popular meat cuts, and popular produce items. You can read more about the stores history here and how they keep things so cheap here!

What I planned to do!

I have to tell you that I was quite impressed. Being an extreme coupon user (meaning that I mainly only buy what is free or close to it each week) I accepted the challenge of seeing just exactly what I could do with $15 in hand and a store that carries mostly store brand items.

At first I thought about using the money to buy things that I wanted to stock up on such as their $.49 canned veggies or their $.99 Fresh Express Lettuce bags (both a great price!) but I wanted to get a little bit more creative.

How far could I actually stretch $15? I know how much $15 usually buy me when I use a ton of coupons in a strategic shopping trip but I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out at a store that had minimal name brand products!

I was able to buy 4 dinners with $15 that would feed a family of 4...YES I said feed 4 meals to a family of 4 on $15!

This is what I bought...

1 Bag of Chicken Leg Quarters @ $5.90
2 bags of shredded cheese @ $2.29 each
1 stock of celery @ $1.99
1 yellow onion @ $.30
1 can of sliced carrots @ $.59
1 pack of egg noodles @ $.99
1 pack of flour tortillas @ $1.39
1 16oz sour cream @ $1.19
1 box of Spanish Rice @ $.69
1 bottle of BBQ @ $1.39
1 taco dinner kit @ $1.79
Total: $20.80

Coupons Used:
$5 off of $20 here
$1 off of 2 bags of Shredded Cheese here
Total Out-Of-Pocket: $.10 ( I went over my $15 gift card budget by $.10 due to tax).

Here are the meals that I was able to make out of the items I purchased...

Chicken N' Dumplins (2 1/2 cups of shredded chicken, 5 cups of broth)
Chicken Noodle Soup (2 1/2 cups of shredded chicken, 10 cups of broth)
Chicken Tacos with a side of rice (just by following the directions on the box) (1 cup of shredded chicken)
BBQ Chicken Pizza (2 1/2 cups of shredded chicken)(just add chicken BBQ Sauce and fresh diced or sliced onion!)

All of these meals can be made at the same time. I took the entire bag of chicken leg quarters and boiled them. Once I pulled the chicken from the bones I had about 9 cups of shredded chicken and split it between the meals (as shown next to each listing).

I also saved all of the chicken broth to re-use in the recipes.

Now I know that most of you wouldn't want to have chicken 4 nights in a row but you can throw other meals in with these chicken dinners. The soup, chicken taco mix, and the pizza freezes well, and the dumplins would need to be eaten the same day or the next.

Overall, I was very impressed with Save A Lots prices, simplistic atmosphere, and friendly workers. Since the store is so far away I cannot warrant a weekly trip but I will definitely make a trip about once every 2 or 3 months to stock up on things like the $.49 canned goods (Walmart cannot even beat this price!), dried spices such as coarse black pepper and garlic which are a fraction of the cost elsewhere, and many other great finds!

A big thanks goes out to Save A Lot for including me on this great opportunity to try something new!

My Shopping Trip: Publix Ending 11/17

This week I picked up a few items that I didn't have coupons for and some items that cost more out-of-pocket. My total was a little higher than normal due to this! I usually spend a consistent $30 or less each week for a ton of items at Publix but every now and then I spend a little more...besides I deserve to splurge a little here and there right?

This shopping trip was done with tissues in-hand! I came down with some wonderful sinus issues over the weekend. I still have yet to determine if it's allergies or a cold...we shall see over the next few days!

Once I was ready to check out I told the cashier that I was sick and that I had some hand sanitizer for anyone who touched the stuff that I had touched (just in case it wasn't allergies). Turns out that she had come down with similar symptoms while at work and I just so happened to have some extra OTC medicine that I shared with her! We laughed as we both cringed each time an item was scanned...the beep was horrendous to the both of us! Gotta love it...but shopping continues, dinners still need to be cooked and people still have to go to work...we learn to deal with it! This is why I came prepared for germ control! I even made the bagger use hand sanitizer after he helped put the bags in my car! Again...just in case!

Due to the pounding headache coming back I missed out on about $10 in savings. I didn't realize this until I got ready to break the trip down for you. I won't worry about it...I get so many things for free each week and if I don't catch it while I'm at the store I generally just write it off! I forgot to use my $5/$25 coupon along with many other coupons and let's not mention the stuff that I didn't get...because I was ready to go! LOL

I was feeling pretty bad at the end of the shopping trip and my mind was so scattered due to a head ache! Lost out of $13 worth of savings...it's ok though! I save so much money each week there anyways! I didn't want to make a special trip back to the store just to redeem my coupons!

My Shopping Trips: Publix - Kroger - Walmart

This is a late posting of my prior shopping trips from Kroger's Mega Sale! I made a ton of trips to take advantage of the event. In addition to multiple transactions there I made a trip over to Publix and Walmart too! I just couldn't let this one go without showing you everything that I purchased!

Kroger had awesome deals this week. I purchased a lot of it for free & there were even some items that gave me overages!

I had a ton of items and a lot of coupons! I thought that I would record a commentary video with some tips instead of breaking each trip down since it was so huge!

My Grand Total: $789.47
Total Spent Out-Of-Pocket: $97.99 with tax!

Yes...I'm nuts...but I love being able to help other families out with the items that I get for free or close to it!

This time I decided to record a video with commentary. I am testing out video for future recordings. I used the Windows Movie Player software this time and was not impressed with the quality of the video. I have been informed on what to use next time so hopefully the quality will be better!

There were multiple items not in the video...I had already put them away! All-in-all I purchased 321 items. If you want to look at it this way...I paid an average of $.30 per item purchased!

Items not pictured...
6 rolls of Sparkle paper towels (gave away)
24 pk of Quilted Northern toilet paper (gave away)
4 packs of Dixie paper plates (gave away)
4 cans of Dole pineapple (eaten)
1 4pk of Greenwise toilet paper (gave away)
2 Sundown Vitamins (gave away)
2 boxes of Knox Gelatin (gave away)
Grapes (in the fridge)
bananas (eaten)
5 lbs of chicken (in the freezer)
2 boxes of bandaids (gave away)
3 bottles of Cheerwine (put up)
5 packs of Huggies baby wipes (gave away)
2 Klondike Ice Cream Singles (ate em' on the way home!)
1 All You magazine (by the commode...Just Kidding!)
6 bags of Friskies Treats (Cats ate em')
4 Pillsbury Canned Sweet Rolls (in the fridge)
12 packs of Playtex Gloves (Gave away to the hair dying family members)
5 boxes of BC Fruit Snacks (the rest were pictured) (gave away)
10 Bottles of Propel Water (gave away)

You can view the video below! I had to break it up into 2 separate videos due to the time restriction that YouTube has in place!

Part 1!

Part 2!

If you are not able to see the video above you can also go here for #1 and here for #2!

My Shopping Trip: Wagreens: Getting the hang of it all!

You all know that I am new to shopping at Walgreens and I have to say that I am not the least bit disappointed.

This is the first week that I have tried their Register Reward Program and I am pretty happy with it!

Here is what I bought...

Transaction #1
1 Bayer Contour Meter @ $14.99
Used: $14.99 coupon
Price: FREE
Received $5 RR for purchase!
Saved $79.99!

Transaction #2
Brach Santas @ $1.50

Cookie @ $.99 (because the cashier asked so nicely! was a contest for them to sell the most!)

9 Ocean Spray Juices @ $1.99 each
Used: $1/1 Peelies on product
Stacked with $1/1 November Coupon Booklet coupon
Price: FREE
Yes...I left plenty on the shelves! They had about 30 bottles with the coupons on them!

2 Baking Clabber Girl Baking Powder @ $.99
Used: In-Ad Coupon that made them $.50 each
Stacked with: $.50/1 IP coupons from here
Price: FREE

Walgreens 32oz Honey @ $7.49
Used: In-Ad coupon making it only $3.99 (cheap for honey)
Price: $3.99

CornStarch @ $.99
Used as filler

Also used a $5/$25 coupon in-ad!

Total Before Coupons and Sales: $54.28
Total After Coupons and Sales: $2.42
Total Savings: $51.86

Transaction #3

3 Tylenol Cold @ $4.99 each
Used: 3 - $2/1 IP coupons
Stacked with 1 - $1/1 Tylenol Cold coupon from the Healthy Savings Booklet (took off $3)

1 Sudafed @ $5.99
Used: $2/1 coupon

2 Jiffy Corn Meal Mix @ $.79 each
2 Seasonings @ $.99 each
Used: In-Ad coupon making them $.50 each

1 box of raisins and 1 box of dried cranberries @ $1 each

OK this one was weird. I had no trouble with using the $5/$25 coupon in the second transaction but this one gave us trouble.

I was able to use the $5/$25 coupon but only when we didn't ring up the sesonsing in-ad coupon. I had an equal amount of products to coupons and I wasn't going negative. We used a different $5/$25 coupon.

The cashier was boggled too! We scanned everything and scanned the $5/$25 first. Once we started taking off the manufacturers coupon the $5/$25 coupon kept voiding itself out once the total went below $25! We rang this transaction up about 4 times trying to figure out why it was doing it! The manager couldn't even figure out what was going on! Finally we ended up using all of the coupons except one of the in-store coupons.

Total Before Savings & Coupons: $30 even
Total After Saving & Coupons: $6.81
Received $10 RR towards next purchase! Profit of $3.19!

Not too bad for my first RR run! I hope to become a pro here like I have at CVS! I would love to be able to go in paying less than $1 each time like I do at CVS!

Both the cashier and the manager were super nice...I love that!

Rite Aid Shopping Trip: 11/10

What I bought...
8 Herbal Essence Shampoos/Conditioners @ $4.49 each
8 Herbal Essence Stylers (Mouse & Hair Spray)
1 bag of candy @ $1.74
1 24pk of Nestle Water @ $3.99

Coupons that I used...
8 Buy One Get One FREE Herbal Essence Coupons from November PG insert
$5/$25 Rite Aid Coupon

Total Before Sales & Coupons: $83.07
Total After Sales & Coupons: $2.11 including tax!

Note: I wrote that Shampoo/Conditioner was in my "Top 10 Things You Should Never Pay For Again" and here is the proof! At least once per year one of the drug stores will run a BOGO sale while there is a BOGO coupon out for that product! Last year it was the L'Oreal Hydra Vive at CVS that I was able to stock up on for free! There are many other opportunities throughout the year to get shampoo and conditioner for free but only once per year will there be no strings attached (ECB's, RR's, SCR's!)!

My Shopping Trips: Walgreens (10/21)

I am so excited about having a Walgreens close by. I didn't have access to one in my other city.

I am starting out slowly by getting the things for free or cheap. I eventually will start doing the Register Reward program once I have the money to spare.

I would like to start off with about $30 OOP from my budget. I plan on making this happen at the end of the month when I need a prescription transferred. I talked to the pharmacy and they said that they would take Rite Aids $25 gift card coupon for a transferred prescription as a competitor and this is how I will be able to only have to pay $5 or so OOP when I start getting the register rewards deals!

For now...I'll just be patient with the freebies and cheap items!

Here is what I bought...

4 Air Wick Compact I Motions @ $3.99 each
Used: $4/1 coupons from the 10/11 SS insert
Price: FREE plus $.04 in overage

Tip: The last coupon did beep but the manager did an override on it for the full amount of $4! (wasn't expecting that)

2 cans of black olives @ $.99 (with in-ad coupon)
Used: $1/2 printable here or the $1/2 from the September 2009 Family Circle magazine.
Price: $.49 each

2 Starbucks Frappachinos @ $1.29 (with in-ad coupon)
Used: $1/1 coupon here
Price: $.29 each
(I didn't care too much for this product. I am not a coffee/cappucino drinker so I guess that's why? I still enjoyed being able to try a new product out for so cheap!)

1 Swivatel Fabric Softener @ $1.99 (with in-ad coupon)
Price: $1.99
I love the way this stuff smells!

2 Halloween Pencils (for fillers) @ $.12 each (to cover the amount of coupons I had versus products)

Total Before Sales & Coupons: $44.99
Total After Sales & Coupons: $5.25

Not Totally free but worth $5 definitely!

Question: I asked my Walgreens Pharmacy and the manager about the Healthy Savings Coupon Booklet and they had no clue what I was talking about! I found coupons in their free diabetes freebie magazine but not the booklet. If anyone can give me a little more information on it and how long ago you found it in the store please let me know! Thanks, Lissa!

Question: If you or a website that you visit has a great tutorial on Walgreens I would love to share the information. I had a sister-in-law that works for them...so I have already drilled her with questions and think that I get it but I would still love to read and share an article if you know about one! Thanks, Lissa

My Shopping Trip: Food Lion (10/21 sale)

I stepped into Food Lion to stock up on some meat. I have plenty of wiggle room in my budget from not shopping for 1 1/2 months so I will probably go over my budget this week due to the meat sales.

I also splurged on a few special items this week which I normally don't do. You definitely have to reward yourself, at some point, with the things that you love to have! Just do it sparingly!

Tip: When I am running low on meat I try to cut back on my spending prior weeks to ensure that I do not go over my monthly budget! Then I just simply wait for some good meat sales and stock up. Plus I like to always have a little extra money to spare for those manager specials I always run into! Every penny counts!

Here is what I bought...

2 packs of Food Lion Hamburger Buns @ $.59 each
Used: $1/2 FLIP here
Price: $.18 for both packs or $.09 each!

1 dozen eggs @ $1.19
Used: $1/1 FLIP here
Price: $.19

Tip: I plan to go back today to get another carton but I noticed that the advertised price on the shelf was $1.09 not $1.19. I will see if it's the same way today and if it is I will bring that to their attention. Not sure if they have a scan right guarantee like the other stores do. Does anyone know?

3 pks of ground beef (@ $.98/lb) $18.31 for a little over 15 lbs of meat!

Cucumber @ $.69 (needed this for pasta salad that I made for my husband to take to work)

1/2 gallon of milk @ $1.59

Carton of orange juice @ $2.69

1 pk of dinner rolls on manager special for $.89 (we just love these things)

Crisco Extra Lite Olive Oil: Closeout @ $3.44
Used: $1/1 coupon
Price: $2.44

Tip: This is a great price for olive oil. It just so happened that there was a $1/1 coupon in a rectangle smartsource box right next to the crisco olive oil with the $1/1 coupon in it! Keep an eye out at your store and stock up!

Heinz Ketchup @ $2.49 (40oz)
Used: $.75/1 from the 10/4 SS insert
Price: $1.75

Tip: I overlooked the fact that he FLIP here was a manufacturer coupon so I was unable to stack the coupons. When I head over to Publix this week I will check the price there! Heinz almost never has coupons let alone 2 that you can stack at a store to get $1.25 off of one bottle! I will report back! This stuff is our favorite and one of the few things that we won't budge on as far as name brand goes (just personal preference). Time for me to stock up on this!

Food Lion Raspberry Preserves (for a cake that my husband has requested that I make)
Price: $2.99

Total Before Savings & Coupons: $63.12
Total After Savings & Coupons: $32.12

Be sure to check out my post here with a scenario for feeding a crew of 10 for less than $8!

Walmart Shopping Trip: Coupons that pay for produce!

This weekend we are having a "Taco Bar" Extravaganza with family and friends (I'll share more details and recipes later!).

I needed a ton of produce for this shindig so I headed out to our local Walmart. Most of the time I shop at various stores each week for their produce sale items. This time I didn't have time to run around (I actually skipped shopping for the week to have extra money put back in my budget for meat in the next few weeks)...so I decided that I would purchase a few items that would give me overage and pay for most of my produce!

I agree that coupons very rarely come out for produce (except at Publix) but there are other ways to have coupons pay for these items. If your local Walmart or Publix (maybe even Target?) allows you to receive overage from manufacturer coupons then you too can do deals like this! (Each store is different so please check with your local managers before assuming that you will receive the overage!)

Here is what I bought...

10 Adams Flea Collars for Dogs @ $.97 each ($9.70)
12 Pull-Ups Flushable Moist Wipes @ 1.64 each ($19.68)
6 Avocados @ $.68 each ($4.08)
4 Heads of Lettuce @ $.94 each ($3.76)
3.41 lbs of bananas @ $.39/lb ($1.33)
2 pks of Flour Tortillas @ $1.98 each
1 pk of Corn Tortillas @ $3.54
4.95 lbs of Roma Tomatoes @ $1.08/lb ($5.34)
2 Granny Smith Apples @ $.99
2 Red Apples @ $1.28
2.02lbs of Grapes @ $1.98
1 lb of Strawberries @ $1.98
2 Cucumbers @ $.94
3 bunches of Cilantro @ $2.52
2 Lemons @ $.76

Total before coupons: $61.84

Here are the coupons I used...
10 $3/1 Adams Flea & Tick Coupons (these coupons gave me $2.03 in overage each for a total of $20.30 in overage!) (from the 8/30 RP insert)
6 $3/2 Pull-Up Wipes coupons (made them $.14 each) (Does anyone know where this coupon came from? I couldn't find it in the HCW database! I do know that I have had them since sometime in the summer.)

A total of $48 in coupons were used in this trip!

Total After Coupons: $15.52 with tax!

This was an awesome trip. If I weren't behind a couple of weeks with my coupon organizing (which I don't recommend) I would have had the energy to grab a few more coupons for other freebies at Walmart but I was just too plum tuckered out (I stayed up very late painting and woke up really early!). I may make another trip within the next couple of weeks! I have more Adams and Huggies coupons that I would love to use!

Stay tuned for more details on the "Taco Bar" Extravaganza! Feeding a crew of 21 on the cheap...and having fun too!

Kmart: Clearance: Pools and Summer Toys

Click on picture to see a larger image!

I went into Kmart Friday and found some really great prices on their summer items!

Here is what I bought...

3 pks of various water guns: $.87 each each
Party Pool w/ Seat: $5.62
3 Window Pools (multi-color w/ see through windows in the sides): $4.37 each
4 snap up pools (the ones with the hard sides: smallest boxes): $1.87 each
4 2pks of water guns @ $.18 each
1 small 3 ring pool @ $1.62
1 jump rope @ $.24

My total for all of this was ONLY $34.21. Had the items not been on sale I would have paid $248.84 in regular retail!

Kmart is an awesome resource for their clearance items. You can see what I have been able to buy in the past here where I purchased $1018.82 worth of toys for only $122 OOP!

Tip: At Kmart...be a scanner! When you see the yellow or red and white clearance stickers never assume that this is the price! ALWAYS SCAN EVERYTHING! Some of the items will ring up the advertised price but most of the time the items are cheaper!

Be sure to stop by and take a look at my latest shopping trips from Kroger, Food Lion, & Food Depot here! How about checking out my Publix shopping trip from last week here where I bought over $280 worth of groceries for only $25! Interested in more shopping trips? You can check them all out here!

If you find any great Kmart deals this week be sure to leave a comment and let us know what you were able to find!
